Potato risk not great

<N.Z. Prtis AstociaUon) AUCKLAND, Nov. 2. Australian women have been warned not to eat green blighted or damaged potatoes during pregnancy by their Minister of Health (Senator Sir Kenneth Anderson). However a New Zealand authority says that the possibility of birth deformities arises only when blighted potatoes have been stored for some time. Associate Professor G. H. Green of the Auckland University department of obstettrics and gynaecology said that the link between blighted potatoes and birth deformities had been known for some time. The storing of potatoes allowed time for a toxin built up by the action of blight on the vegetable to accumulate, he said. “For this reason, it is not likely to be a problem in New Zealand, where potatoes are not stored for long periods,” Professor Green said.
