WANGANUI. The Munich Olympic Games cyclist, B. G. Stockwell (Canterbury), sprinted over the line for third place in the seventh stage of the Dulux six-day race —from Inglewood to Wanganui, vesterdav—to retain the over-all lead.
The 22-year-old New Caledonian, J. de Maria, became the first from his country to win a stage of the Auckland to Wellington race when he finished first in the 81mile stage.
He was 52sec ahead of the 1968 winner, D. Brown (New Plymouth). Behind Stockwell came B. V. Ulyatt (Hastings), M. J. Hughes (Invercargill) and the defending champion, V. J. Hanaray (Hastings). Stockwell now leads the tour by lOmin 37sec, with Hanaray behind him, followed by Ulyatt, who is only one second further back. Brown leads in the King of the Mountains'with 37 points, with J. Ryder (Timaru) second—only four points away. Stockwell showed his class by winning the morning 12mile time trial from New Plymouth to Inglewood. A pursuit specialist, he finished Msec faster than B. R. Cornish (Wellington) in the time trial. After his great ride on Tuesday from Otorohanga to New Plymouth with Brown, Stockwell was quite happy to coast along up near the front of the main bunch over the stage yesterday. De Maria, one of only three of the eight New Caledonians left in the race, broke away from the 21-strong field before Patea and rode the final 10 miles on his own after his breakaway mate, V. Richards (Auckland), punctured neat Kai-iwi. Brown, who shared the King of the Mountains lead with Ryder overnight, regained his lead in the hillclimbing section of the race
■ when he took third place in ithe Waitotara climb, plus i fourth place over the Manawapou climb. Richards w’as unlucky to puncture at a vital stage of the race, but it was to do Maria's credit that he was able to stay clear of the fastmoving main bunch.

Fish (Auckland), who won the Stratford and Hawera sprints and was second at Eltham He was ■ also second over the Mana- | wapou hill-climb and third in the Patea and Waverley sprints.
