Walls also reappears
Another former New Zealand athletics champion, M. B. Walls, has reappeared at the Rugby Park inter-club meetings as a coach this season.
He succeeded the Olympic representative, R. O. Johnson (Otago), as champion in both the 120 yards and 220 yards hurdles in 1963. He retired prematurely some years ago but is not yet at an age where as successful comeback could not be considered.
“I would like to compete again but time is the problem,” he said. “It certainly will not be this season—perhaps next.” In the meantime, he is passing on his knowledge to young athletes of his old club, Toe H. As well as being an outstanding hurdler, Walls was also a lOsec 100 yard sprinter and a fine long and triple jumper. At one time he also held the Canterbury high jump title.
