Royal Topaz wins
(N.Z. Press Association) The New Zealand pacer. Royal Topaz (Goodland—Quiet Ways), won the four-year-old stakes over lit furlongs at Harold Park on Tuesday. Driven a well-judged race by K. Bayley, Royal Topaz went to the line two yards and a half clear of Audiogram, with Cloudy Craig five yards away third. In only his second start after a spell, Royal Topaz opened at 4/1 second favourite, but eased in the market to start at 9/1. Julisa (Garrison HanoverSquire’s Lady) completed a double for New Zealand pacers when she won the Mobile Stakes. Starting at 8/1 Julisa beat Sky Boy. The New South Wales pacers Celevale Van and Bay Foyle which were withdrawn from the New Zealand Cup, finished first and second in the main event. Starting off 18 yards, Celevale Van (10/1) fought out the finish of the Quality Handicap with the 10/9 favourite Bay Foyle (24 yards) and won by two yards. The New Zealander Royal Garrison (25/1) was a distant third.
