Black Rod impresses

OTAKL Black Rod showed that he will be the hardest to beat in the New Zealand Derby at Rlccarton on Saturday when he galloped a brilliant trial at Otaki on Tuesday. Working 30ft out on the course proper, which was firm, Black Rod covered a mile and a half, picking up Topsy at the 10 furlongs. The pair ran at speed from the mile, Black Rod finishing seven furlongs in Imiri 28 4-asec, the last half-mile in 50 , ! ; s „ sac , and last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Black Rod was fufi of running at the finish, but Topsy was Struggling from the turn and finished four lengths behind. Sharda showed his readiness for the Stewards’ Handicap when he scampered over five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last three furlongs in Imin 38 l-ssec. Sharda is in wonderful condition for Riecarton’s big sprint.
