Ship hired for cars

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 1.

The Union Steam Ship Company has chartered a 10,006-ton car carrier to ship 2500 new cars across the Tasman before Christmas.

The Greek-owned ship, the Argos, will be used for about three voyages. She is expected to arrive in New Zealand with about 1000 Australian cars during the middle of November.

The company has an option to renew her charter if there is a demand for her use. During the last 12 months the company has experienced difficulties in handling all the Australian car imports, and from time to time British and foreign ships carried large single shipments.

The situation has been created by an adjustment to the car import quota. The company normally carries about 200 cars a month.
