P AND O SERVICE ALSO

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. A supplementary refrigerated container service to the South Island would begin early next year, the Meat Board said today. The service will be provided by conventional British vessels. Initially six vessels owned by P and O are being fitted out to carry containers on deck, and the first is expected to load in New Zealand next March. Containers will be shipped from the ports at which the vessels load their conventional cargo, but the service is designed primarily to be used in conjunction with the meat loaders in the South Island. Each container has its own refrigeration system and temperature control, to carry chilled or frozen cargo.
