Scourers' ban
Workers in all five of Canterbury’s wool-scouring plants are taking industrial action to reinforce their 15 per cent wage claim after stop-work meetings yesterday. The action being taken varies from plant to plant but generally falls into the category of a ban on overtime and extra work. The workers’ advocate (Mr W. R. Cameron) said last evening that the men were claiming a base rate of about $1.40 an hour, or 15 per cent above their present wage, and that the employers’ last offer before negotiations broke down on Monday was about $1.30 an hour. About 150 men are employed at the five scours at C 1 resent involved in the ban, ut the claim is applicable [to all wool-scouring workers in the South Island and as far north as Marton in the North Island.
