FATE OF TREE
A blackwood tree, planted near Montreal Street 11 years after Christchurch was founded might have to be felled because it is in a dangerous condition. The tree is in the grounds of Christchurch Girls’ High School, and the Department of Education has informed the school’s board of governors that the expense of employing a tree surgeon would not be warranted because of the condition of the tree.
At its meeting last evening, the board expressed surprise at the department’s decision to fell the tree and decided to delay making a decision until next month.
The department has recommended that when the tree is felled its wood should be preserved for use as veneei in panelling for the new Christchurch Girls’ High School on the Flemings Mill site.
