Huntsbury Home to be occupied soon
Huntsbury Home, which was closed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board in July last year, should be the home of about 22 intellectually and physically handicapped children by the beginning of next year.
it will be leased to the Presbyterian Social Services Association on behalf of Mr and Mrs R. Miles, who care for the children in their home, “Little Acre,” in Lincoln Road. There is already a waiting list of children for the home, and Huntsbury can take at least another 12. Although the hospital board agreed to lease the home late last year, the installation of a sprinkler system delayed plans to install the children. The Presbyterian association will be responsible for running the home with assistance from service clubs, and the board will meet the cost of exterior maintenance. The superintendent of the P.S.S.A. (the Rev. G. F. McKenzie) said that the interior of the home was in good condition, and the only alterations needed were to make the building more of a home in atmosphere. “It’s a bit of an institution at the moment,” he said.
