Industrial Relations Bill
Sir,—“M.C.H.” is more than welcome to go and practise a Communist doctrine in Russia, where he may come, in time, to have respect for, or even reverence for, our economic system, where drug problems and alcohol go not uncomfortably hand-in-hand with high standards of living and good conditions of housing and golden opportunities for the more enterprising to make a substantial fortune and name for himself. Where there is comparatively little restraint on personal freedom of expression, you have inevitably a lunatic fringe who take advantage of the generous flexibility of our society. Not so in Russia. Flexibility in every sphere of national activity is non-existent. Those with social hang-ups may, with government disapproval, commit suicide, but nothing but soul-destroying uniformity is tolerated. Why? Because the government realises the threat to its omni-
potence of allowing people to be themselves.—Yours, etc., P.J.S.
