Doctors’ fees

Sir, —In view of the recent Government subsidy given to supplement doctors’ fees, one would expect a corresponding reduction in charges to the patient. My wife, however, has just been to the doctor and, to our surprise and consternation, the fee had risen by 50 cents to $2.50, an all-time high. I fail to see how this can be justified.—Yours, etc.,

PETER LEE. October 19, 1972. [Dr Brian Heyward, for the Medical Association of New Zealand, replies: “The increase in the general medical services benefit to patients recently announced by the Government does not commence until November 1, 1972. After this date there will be an over-all adjustment of medical fees.”]
