Firearms and security

Sir,•—Years ago I wrote and pointed out that if the police armed themselves the criminals would do the same. You report (page 2, September 25) that a police sergeant fired a shot and subsequently a 15-year-old boy tried to shoot a police constable. You also report Dr A. M. Finlay as implying that there is a law allowing security men to carry guns when escorting currency or bullion. What law is this? There is no death penalty in New Zealand except for treason, I believe. Firearms are specifically for killing and should never be allowed for law enforcement except in special cases where an armed offenders squad, composed only of specially trained police marksmen (not of any and

every available constable) is needed.—Yours, etc., “P. E. GRANITE.” September 26, 1972. [No reply has been received from the Minister of Police, who was invited to comment on this letter.]
