Armaments strike?
Sir, —“Can we imagine a general strike of armament workers throughout the world, morally motivated, reasoned, and non-violent?” (Sir Guy Powles, January, 1970). Not just a stoppage of armament workers but a strike by all unions who are in any way involved in the industry. I would suggest to Mr Stenner that when next he attends the International Labour Organisation convention this method of curtailing the manufacture and distribution be forwarded as a remit from the New Zealand F.O.L. There are 40 million individuals employed in the armament industry, and millions more producing the necessary accessories for making war. Unless some such scheme is adopted there is little hope of breaking the stranglehold the industry has on world affairs. The United Nations have for a long time been studying ways of transferring the resultant redundant labour force to conventional production without upsetting the economy to any great extent.- —Yours, etc., R. J. GLEN. October 28, 1972.
