MAGICIANS’ SHOW

1100 children at performance

About 1100 children from Christchurch institutions attended the Canterbury Society of Magicians’ annual “International Day of Magic” show in the Civic Theatre on Saturday. Magicians throughout the world provide free entertainment for children from institutions on the nearest Saturday to October 31, to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Harry Houdini. Six Christchurch magicians and some visiting musicians took part in the show, the visiting musicians being Maurice Clark, Ken Boniface, Danny McGirr, and the Modernaires.

On arrival at the theatre, the children were met by members of the society and voluntary helpers, including members of the Girl Guide Assoication’s Ranger unit. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) welcomed the children and thanked the visiting artists and the society. The Canterbury Society of Magicians was formed in 1939 and has 14 members. In the first 14 years of the society’s existence, members visited and performed at institutions for children.

A show has been held in the Civic Theatre for the last 19 years.
