Minister asks for report

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 27. The Minister of Labour (Mr Thomson) has asked his department for a full report on a decision reported yesterday that an Englishman with a prison record is, by law, a prohibited immigrant. Mr Justice McMullin, in a written decision in Auckland, ruled that an Englishman, Mr Henry Green, who arrived in New Zealand in March, 1970, at his own expense, was a prohibited immigrant. Mr Green had had two convictions in Britain-—in 1952 and 1954—f0r housebreaking and theft. One of the regulations required prospective immigrants to New Zealand to fill in a form which asked about earlier terms of imprisonment, Mr Justice McMullin said. “I am informed that, without the authority of the statute or regulation, the Department of Labour has dispensed with the completion of that form in the case of emigrants from the United Kingdom.” Today Mr Thomson said that it would be inappropriate for him to comment at this stage. “I have asked my department to secure a copy of the decision and to furnish me with a full report,” he said.
