Shirt sizes

Sir, — I have a problem with shirt sizes. Unless I buy a very expensive shirt with a choice of sleeve lengths I end up with my hands permanently covered in order to get the right neck size. I consider that sleeves are superfluous and would gladly do without them but here I meet another problem. All shortsleeved shirts seem to be so short in body that the tail comes out after a few minutes wearing. Am I deformed? Or is it possible that the shirt makers work on a set of related sizes

compiled in the last century and not amended since?— Yours, etc., N.H. July 10, 1972. [Mr J. G. Aston, a director of Lichfield (N.Z.), Ltd, who is also president of the New Zealand Textile and Garment Manufacturer’s Federation, replies: “Half-sleeve style business shirts and all variations of long sleeve shirts have the same length of back for a particular neck size. My company offers five basic colours in three sleeve lengths, and another manufacturer offers five sleeve lengths, and this variety appears to cover the market.”]
