Delays to flights
Poor weather over most of New Zealand yesterday caused minor disruptions to air traffic. Some flights were about an hour late leaving Christchurch, but no departures were cancelled and all passengers unable to leave Christchurch on Tuesday left yesterday. Only one scheduled arrival —a flight from Oamaru and Timaru —was cancelled, but more for reasons of bad weather at those airports, and passengers travelled to Christchurch by bus. Dunedin Airport was closed early in the day, bub later became marginal as were both Christchurch and Wellington airports all day. Because of the closing of Dunedin, a Viscount flight which normally lands there on its way from Invercargill to Wellington, overflew Dunedin and landed at Christchurch instead.
Heavy snow which fell in the Otira-Arthur’s Pass region throughout the day yesterday closed the Otira Pass road at 5 p.m. Until then the Automobile Association (Canterbury) had been advising the use of chains on the pass. The road is expected to be open to traffic again about midday today, but chains will be necessary.
Games stickers.—The use of Commonwealth Games emblems on overseas mail for publicity has been suggested by Mr R. H. Stillwell. He said yesterday that Games stickers should be available at all post offices.
