The first of eight light fittings for the Town Hall was blown at the Crown Crystal Glass works yesterday. It is the largest piece of glass blown at the works. The finished fittings are spherical, between 33in and 36in in diameter, and inside the glass globe is a central core of 104 25-watt lamps. The spheres were blown in two sections under the direction of Mr F. Schafer; the initial weight of the glass in the half sections was 501 b. These were blown into a mould and when finished each weighed between 331 b and 341 b. Six men were involved in the blowing. The photographs show Mr J. Thompson, of Crown Crystal Glass, inspecting a cluster of 104 lamps and Mr F. Schafer, a glassblower, shaping one of the glass surrounds for the clusters.
