Bell tower’s history

The old fire brigade bell tower at Lyttelton, in Sumner Road, opposite the police station, was erected in March, 1902, said the Christchurch architect, Mr J. K. Collins, yesterday. The tower is to be dismantled and moved to Ferrymead by the Fire Services Historical Society. Mr Collins said the bell tower was part of a contract to build the old fire station, and both tower and station had been designed by Collins and Harman, forerunner of the architectural firm now known as Collins, Hunt and Associates. The contract to build the old fire station was let to Mr W. W. Smith, and signed in November, 1901, for a price of £2410. The bell tower was an additional part of the contract, signed for in March, 1902, for a cost of £312. It replaced an old bell tower, designed by Collins and Harman in 1889 and built at a cost of £44. Mr Collins said his firm also designed the present Lyttelton Fire Station.
