Students’ move condemned
Condemnation of the threat to withdraw Students’ Association facilities for the Commonwealth Games if next year’s proposed Springbok tour takes place was made yesterday by the University of Canterbury Law Students* Society, The society said that the action on Tuesday of the University of Canterbury Students’ Representative Council over the withdrawal threat was deplorable, and tantamount to intimidation of a body which had no control over the policy of the New Zealand Rugby Union. “Such improper conduct is not supported by the Law Students’ Society,” a statement said. “Whatever may be the merits of the campaign against the proposed Springbok tour, it is felt that no credit can be attributed to the Students’ Representative Council for what is clearly a case of taking the matter beyond the legitimate boundaries of the protest, particularly as this involves going back on undertakings already given which have prompted an acceleration in Government spending on university building programmes.”
