VANDALS AT RAIL YARDS
Damage estimated at $2OO was caused by vandals who went on a smashing spree around the Addington Railway Station last week-end.
The station master at Addington (Mr R. H. G. Neal) said yesterday that the damage was probably caused between 4.30 p.m. on Saturday and 4.30 p.m. on Sunday. Five ground-level signal lights were smashed. Mr Neal said that if this damage had not been detected early, serious dislocation of train services, especially shunting operations, could have occurred. The cost of repairing these lights was estimated at between $3O and $4O.
Twelve to 18 lights on the station platform were smashed, and these would cost about $4O to replace, said Mr Neal. The weigh-bridge building
was extensively damaged. A large plate-glass window and two smaller windows were broken, and the glass covering the dial on the weighing machine was broken. Mr Neal said this glass alone would be worth about $4O.
Minor damage was also
done to a smallgoods shed.
The signal box overlook, ing the station was not being manned when the vandalism is thought to have occurred.
