Early telegraphists
Sir, —I was delighted to see the picture on page 12 of your issue of March 2. Your caption is, however; misleading. “Four of the original 16 telegraphists,” if still alive, would be old enough to be the grandfathers of the men pictured. These were four of the original multiplex operators trained by the department. And they were all experts in the operation of the Morse key. I have no doubt they could all still do
their 30-odd words a minute if called on. What delighted me was to see these old colleagues of mine still looking so fit and well, or apparently so. May they have many more years of useful life and still, with their expertise, be able to translate “rits the nitter.”—Yours, etc, “H. TIMSFAD.” March 7, 1972.
