Oyster prices

Sir, —We were absolutely amazed to read “Disgusted’s” letter of March 2. How ignorant can a person be? He said that oysters are riot fenced or hand-fed, so should not be subject to price increases. It is assumed that he, an ordinary working person, expects his wage increases to suit rising prices. So who is he to say that the fisherman is not entitled to an increase in income too? Apart from all other pressures of rising costs, the fisherman is faced with higher boat maintenance and fuel expenses. This forces him to raise the price of his fish to allow him to make a reasonable profit. If “Disgusted” cannot afford to pay the requested price of oysters, then may we suggest he either attempt dredging them himself, or change his eating habits?—Yours, etc, BROWN EYES. Golden Bay. March 5, 1972.
