New Zealand scored a dramatic, 2-1 victory over the Philippines in the world softball championship yesterday. K. F. Herlihy, with a hit to right field, brought in W L. Davis from second base for the winning run in the ninth innings. It was the Philippines’ second defeat and the win almost ensured New Zealand being a semi-finalist. The Kiwis have lost only once, and the unbeaten United States are the only team with a better record. The United States retained their unbeaten record with a 10-0 victory over Singapore. The Philippines lost their unbeaten record, going down 1-5 to Japan after New Zealand had outplayed the Japanese, 7-0, earlier in the day.
The lowa state champion, representing the United States, overwhelmed Singa--pore with three runs at the top of the third innings, a run in each of the fourth and fifth, three in the sixth, and two more in the seventh. Japan shocked the Philippines with its strong performance. It scored two runs at the bottom of the first innings, and after the Filipinos had scored in the third, Japan added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
C rick, t^—Th, Australian board of control has named the Western Australian captain. J. T. Inveracity, as third selector for the cricket team to tour Ejisland. The other selectors are I. M. Chappell and K. Stackpole.
