OLYMPIC TRIALS
Programme
criticised
"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. The time of events for the regional contest and Olympic trials at Auckland on March 18 was criticised at a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening. Mr T. E. Baker said that they should have been arranged to give the best possible chance to athletes seeking Olympic nomination.
The national sprint champion, B. Smith (Wellington), would have to run the 400 metres and then the 200 metres. “That’s obviously not the logical order,” said Mr Baker.
The meeting agreed to ask the Auckland centre to make alterations to the programme as it felt necessary. The meeting will start at 2 p.m. with a programme of field events, and a full track series, three field events in the evening. The trials will be attended by the noted American sprint coach, Mr B. Winter, who arrives in Christchurch on Saturday for a private coaching tour of New Zealand.
