Hawke seeks controls

(N.Z.P.A ‘Reuter—Copyright) PERTH, March 7.

Inflation in Australia should be countered by legislative control of both wages and prices, according to the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Mr Robert Hawke.

Speaking during a television debate with West Australia’s Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Charles Court), Mr Hawke said that it was unfair for workers to have to justify the price of their labour before an arbitration tribunal. Prices did not have to be justified by such arbitration and companies could raise prices as they wished. He urged a single apparatus to legislate on all prices, including the price of labour.
