(N.Z. P.A.‘Reuter—Copyright) LA PAZ (Bolivia), March 7.
Mrs Beate Klarsfeld has conceded defeat in her campaign to prove that a naturalised Bolivian businessman, Mr Klaus Altmann, is really Klaus Barbie, a Nazi war criminal.
After the German-bom Mrs Klarsfeld and her companion, Mrs Ita Halaunbrenner, aged 67, who was a victim of the Gestapo and said that she could identify Barbie, had chained themselves to a bench in La Paz yesterday, demanding action against Mr Altmann, Mrs Klarsfeld said that they would leave for Europe tonight
The Bolivian Government had refused to order a confrontation between Mr Altmann and Mrs Halaunbrenner.
The two women gave up their chains protest because Mrs Halaunbrenner was in a state of nervous depression.
