ROBBERY IN AUCKLAND
Police seeking armed man (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 9. Auckland detectives are still seeking a man who held up a Point Chevalier service station on Saturday and escaped with more than $lOO. Armed with what the police believe to be a .22 rifle the robber walked into the garage about 2.45 a.m. He waved the rifle at two attendants who were sitting in the service station office and demanded money. When they explained they were unable to open the safe, the man ordered them outside and told them to run down Great North Road toward the city. The robber then quickly went back inside the garage, stole about $lO5 from a till, and fled. Police cordoned the area and dog patrols followed a trail through back streets for nearly a mile before losing the scent.
Detective Senior-Sergeant C. E. Stuart, of the Auckland Central C. 1.8., said that the robber was fairly well disguised. According to the attendants, the man wore a peaked hat pulled down over his face, a thick scarf and a pair of dark glasses. He was also wearing overalls. The robber was a man of few words. All he uttered during the robbery was, “Money, safe, out.”
