Scouts spend $54,500 at jamboree
(New Zealand Preu Association)
AUCKLAND, January 8.
The sum of $54,500 has been withdrawn from the three banks at the national scout jamboree by the 6500 boys.
To noon yesterday, figures showed that $32,000 had been withdrawn from the jamboree branch of the National Bank. The Post Office Savings Bank which is handling an average of 700 transactions a day, estimated that $15,000 has been taken out by the scouts, and the Auckland Savings Bank has issued $6500. Souvenirs and badges worth about $21,000 have been sold by the jamboree trading post. The scouts’ appetites emp-
tied their pockets of a further $22,000 in sales at the jamboree store, and shopkeepers in nearby Pukekohe report that their turnovers hive increased as much as four times.
The jamboree was closed officially tonight by the chairman of the World Scout Training Committee (Mr B. H. Gamsley, of Australia). The event had been a tremendous success, said the camp chief (Brigadier S. F. Catchpole). This was largely because of the good variety of activities available.
