GAMES MARATHONS
A man who suffers from the physical handicap of' multiple sclerosis will attempt to swim 50 lengths of the Wharenui Pool, to try to raise $lOOO for the Commonwealth Games Fund.
On Sunday, December 12, Mr W. R. Clough, a 49-year-old sufferer from multiple sclerosis will attempt to swim 50 lengths (about one mile) of the Wharenui indoor pool. Mr Clough is paralysed in both legs and the right hand,
but swimming backstroke he had managed up to 30 lengths of the pool on Sunday evenings, when it is reserved for the use of paraplegics. Although he has never swum 50 lengths, not even before he became a victim of multiple sclerosis in 1962, Mr Clough is confident that he will complete the distance. Before he was afflicted, he was a keen participating sportsman and had won several Canterbury championships in cycling. He also played Rugby football and soccer as a schoolboy at Canterbury representative level. Already Mr Clough has
had many promises of sponsorship and he intends also to subsidise each dollar of sponsorship at 2c, to a maximum of $5O. If he should fail to achieve his target he will give to the Games fund $5 for each uncompleted length.
BOWLING MARATHON Another scheme to raise money for the Commonwealth Games was announced on Monday. Starting at noon on Friday, four members of the Hornby Working Men’s Club indoor bowls section will make an attempt on the world record for continuous play—s2 hours, held by a Wanganui club. The four bowlers are B. Stewart, L. McLennan, F. Innes and R. Smith.
Sponsorship is being sought from various quarters, with a number of other working men’s clubs have offered to contribute at a dollar an hour.
