WELLINGTON, Nov. 29.
The report of the Commission of Inquiry into Equal Pay was today described as a most satisfactory and down-to-earth report, by the National Council of Women of New Zealand.
In particular, the council welcomed the recommendation that the Government should consider the effect of equal pay on single income families and solo parents when it receives the report from the Social Security Commission. A statement from the council says that equal pay is a “matter of simple justice.” “We realise that it is not a simple matter to implement, and the period chosen should allow the cost totalling between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent of over-all price levels to be absorbed by the economy.
“We feel there will still be a need for vigilance to ensure that the report is adopted and implemented, and to see that no undesirable sideeffects develop, especially in the social sphere,” said the council.
