Established miners rise
Established mining stocks made worth-while gains in moderately quiet trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. The gains, shared to a lesser degree in the industrial sector, were mainly a reaction to Japan’s decision to revalue the yen.
C.R.A. jumped 40c to 500 c and Bougainville, which has retreated sharply in recent weeks, recovered 2c to 160 c. Peko picked up 40c at 600 c, and Laverton, which was queried by the Melbourne Stock Exchange rose 5c at 9c. Western Mining was higher at 238 c, and Hamersley, which has iron ore contracts with Japan, was steady on 245 c. Utah, Seicast and M.I.M. were others to improve. Robe River rose 10c at 75c.
B.H.P. gained 24c at 966 c, Comalco was 22c higher at 280 c, and Herald, which reported higher profits, was steady on 360 c. E.Z.I. sold down to 220 c before closing at 225 c on the chairman’s prediction of higher profits this year. Minster, subject of a takeover bid from Capital Carpet, dropped 4c to 146 c, and Yellow Express dropped 3c to 87c. Life Savers, Monbulk and National Bank were steady. Among the oils, which were very quiet, Mid Eastern at 62c and Woodside at 85c were lower, while N.S.W. Oil and Gas, Endeavour and Bridge were steady.
