WOMEN’S BOWLS
Qualifiers in
Rose Bowl
Thirty-five teams yesterday qualified for post-sectidn play in the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre’s annual Rose Bowl tournament.
The event attracted 110 fours, and yesterday, in conditions which made consistent bowling difficult, there were three rounds to complete the section play started two weeks ago but interrupted by rain. Most of. the prominent skips qualified, although two notable exceptions were the defending champion, Mrs E. Warren (Barrington), and Mrs D. Beaumont (Redcliffs), the runner-up last year. Both were out of contention before the final round.
Today’s post-section play will be at the Woolston W.M.C. and Burwood, and it is expected that the finalists will be found tomorrow morning. Skips to qualify were:— Four wins.—Mesdames E> Hornsby (Sydenham), H. Howse (St Albans), Mrs M. Rosanowskl (Rlccarton Racecourse), Mrs E. Milne (Woolston W.M.C.), Mrs A. Beazley (Linwood), Mrs M. Detbridge (Opawa), I. Steele (Burwood), J. Rennie (Rangiora), and A. Whiting (Woolston W.M.C.). Three wins.—Mesdames M. Burrell (South Brighton), J. Blair (Burwood), E. Stanners (Morrison Avenue), M. Howie (Shirley), A. Sinclair (Woolston W.M.C.), L. Wederall (Spreydon), J. Walker (Shirley), W. Adams (St Albans), L. Ash (Papanui), M. Kerr (Mt Pleasant), D. Hornq (Beckenham), A. Bowls.—Hawke’s Bay, last year’s winners of the Rothman’s North Island East Coast intercentre bowling championships, made it two in a row in Masterton at the week-end by beating the Wairarapa Red team, 15-12. Also competing were teams from Gisborne-East Coast and Wairarapa Yellow. Rugby union.—The 1971 Wallabies have left Paris at the end of their Rugby union tour of France. They won four of their eight matches. The Wallabies flew to New York, where they play a local side today. They end the tour with a match against a Vancouver side on Saturday."
