Water-polo matches

B.ek.nhim ■ Sockburn and University last evening moved Into a iolnMead In the senior water polo championship at the Waltham Park pool. University, however, has the bye next Monday, and Wharenul has the awesome task of preventing Beckenham-Sockbum moving into a lead by Itself. Awesome indeed, as ElmwoodTaylor’s Mistake found last evening when It was crushed, 17-1. University beat Wharenul, 4-1, after a sternly-contested match. In reserve-grade matches. South Brighton beat Christchurch Boys* High School, 2-0; Services had a 2-1 win against Beckenham-Sockbum; and New Brighton had a 6-0 margin over University. BECKENHAM-SOCKBURN 17 (B. M. Mustchin 4, L. M. Scott 3, P. R. Tweedie 3, M. A. Harding 2, M. C. Scott 2, D. J. Reid 2, G. McEwan). ELMWOOD-TAYLOR’S MISTAKE 1 (M. ShlUlto). Beckenham aimed, said Its cap-

tain and coach, Murray Scott, to score four goals in each quarter. And. apart from the five scored in the first quarter, Beckenham achieved just that. Beckenham’s superiority was clear from the first swim-up; equally that Elmwood was not equipped to contain virtually the Canterbury side, let alone match The pace-setter in the senior championship, then, chose the match to practice its skills and team-work, and the result was generally a well-drilled performance. In the third quarter, however, Beckenham did lapse into some loose and untidy play.

UNIVERSITY 4 (R. Gunthoro 2, p. G. C. Hay, I. H. Mac-

Donald). WHARENUI 1 (B. R. Hazlett). It was a pity that such an important game should be ultimately decided by a disputed goal. University was leading 2-1 in the final quarter, but Wharenui was far from a beaten team.

Then Hay shot, the ball bounded out from the underside of the crossbar, and, a goal was awarded. With the goal-judge inattentive, the referee stood by his decision. University started very well, and had the game under control by half-time. But there were signs of a Wharenul revival, and it definitely held away in the third quarter. Disputed goal or not. University played well enough in the final quarter to preserve its lead; and to continue the fightback after its disastrous start to the season.
