INJURED DRIVER
Progress by G. Cooke
Gavin Cooke, the wellknown Christchurch boat builder, yatchsman, arid power-boat driver, is progressing well in the Oarnaru Hospital and is expected to return home in 10 days. Cooke broke two bones in his right leg when the tunnel boat Miss Glasskraft was holed at more than 50 m.p.h. in the Aviemore power-boat marathon earlier this month.
The short, steep chop on Lake Aviemore when the race was held did not suit the tunnel-hulled boat. Cooke had a device on the bow to make the going smoother, but the device caught a steep wave and the bow was dragged under. The stress holed the boat—fibreglass over ply—and Cooke’s leg was dragged through the bottom of the boat and two bones were broken.
A boat-building apprentice crewing the craft with Cooke was not hurt. Miss Glasskraft sank in 40ft of water. Both the hull and the $5OOO Johnson Stinger outboard engine have been salvaged, and neither has suffered irreparable damage.
