Paper Tigers do well in handicap event

A Blenheim yachtsman, H. Hawthorne, sailing the Paper Tiger Pussy Galore won the Handicap Trophy when the South Island catamaran championships were held off the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club, Lyttelton, at the week-end.

The handicap section was held over the two class .-aces on the clubs normal competition course on the harbour. It was planned to hold three races in each class, but the southerly conditions experienced yesterday morning forced the cancellation of the races scheduled for that time. Paper Tigers dominated the major placings in the handicap event. Miss Boutique (B. Johnson) and Whisper (A. Maturin) gaining second and third places, respectively, behind Pussy Galore.

The leading Christchurch A class skipper, C. Papps, had a convincing win in the open invitation event raced on Saturday morning. Sailing Christabel, he beat his close rival, C. Hensley, in Kerola by three minutes.

It was somewhat obvious that some of the leading A and B class crews were saving their energy for the scheduled three class races. The 10-knot breeze which sprang up during the race was too late to help the international Tornado crews.

Papps had a convincing overall win in the A class championship, gaining a maximum of 209 points with wins in both races. However, Papps did receive some stiff competition from Hensley in the second race yesterday afternoon, with the lead changing hinds • number of timesThe over-all third place-getter K. Chlrnslde (Belinda) suffered ill fortune in the race when bis boat was holed and had to be towed back to the clubhouse.

The reigning national A class champion, W. Hende (West Coast), in Candida, tied for first place over all with Johnson’s Miss Boutique in the Paper Tiger class championship. Both skippers gained 175 points and Hawthorne, in Pussy Galore, was third with 110 points. SABRES The B class and Sabre class championships were also affected by the weather and the second race had to be cancelled. Because the competitors are all from Christchurch the scheduled third races in both championships will be held next weekend. Results were:—
