Cup protest dismissed

(tf.Z. Press Association) BRISBANE. The five-year-old Red Gauntlet gelding, The Monk, had to survive a protest before being declared the winner of the $BOOO Queensland Cup (2m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The Monk, 10 to 9 on favourite, won by a neck from Prince Meteor (7 to 1) with battling on gamely for third one length and three-quarters away. Prince Meteor was the early leader but the field closed on him at the turn and he lopked likely to finish last. However, he ran on courageously and would not give in.

His rider protested unsuccessfully against The Monk on the grounds of interference in the final furlong. The original field of 18 was cut to nine when half the final acceptors were scratched. The only New Zealand-bred winner on the programme was five-year-old Heroic Isle (Beau Diable—Fair Isle) whoch won the Flying Handicap fresh up from Capital. Chime and Regal Gauntlet.

Trinidad emergency Trinidad and Tobago has extended the state of emergency proclaimed on October 19, because of a deteriorating labour situation, until February next year. Seventeen people have been detained under emergency regulations since the proclamation.— Port of Spain, Nov. 14.
