Ruddiman trophy to Wellington

A. Wellington crew, B< Bridge end K. Leedbetter, won the Canterbury R class yachting squadron's Ruddlman trophy event, which was sailed off the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club at Lyttelton at the week-end.

The event, which attracted some of the finest crews in the Dominion, including six from Wellington and four from Dunedin, as well as Canterbury crews, was sailed in conjunction with the South Island catamaran championships and, like these, was affected by adverse weather conditions.

The trophy was to have been contested over four handicap races, but the third race, scheduled for yesterday morning, had to be cancelled. Wellington crews filled the two top positions over all, for Reprimand (W. Hayman and D. Smith) was second. Unique (T. Champion and C. Poland), a Canterbury boat, and Vagabond (D. Price and S. Driver), a Dunedin boat, filled third and fourth positions.

Vagabond recently won the South Island championships for the class, while Radiant (M. Pinkney and T. Brandon, Wellington), is a former Canterbury boat. Pinkney won the Leander trophy two years ago.

Results were:— First race (15 starters).— Unique (T. Champion and C. Poland, Canterbury) 1, Repeat (R. Casey and M. Suhr) 2, Radiant (M. Pinkney and T. Brandon, Wellington) 3. Fastest time: Relent (J. Rountree and H. Miller, Canterbury). Second race (14 starters).— Reprimand (W. Hayman and D. Smith, Wellington) 1, Ragamuffin (M. Bridge and K. Leadbetter, Wellington) 2, Vagabond (D. Price and S. Driver, Dunedin) 3. Fastest time: Vagabond. Third race (seven starters).— Ragamuffin (M. Bridge and K. Leadbetter, Wellington) 1, Reprimand (W. Hayman and D. Smith, Wellington) 2, Naiad (J. Snelgrove and H. Miller, Canterbury) 3. Fastest time: Naiad. Over-all placings: Ragamuffin 1, Reprimand 2, Unique 3, Vagabond 4.
