Close polling for Timaru mayoralty

The focal point of the South Canterbury local body elections was Timaru City where, in a three-way Mayoralty contest, Mr C. R. Hervey' secured a marginal victory on the provisional count. He beat his nearest rival (Mr L. R. Jenkin) by 3555 votes to 3118, while the third candidate (Mr L. R. Oliff) gained 2172 votes.

Mr Hervey served on the : city council for 12 years to 1968 when he did not seek re-election. In that time, he : was chairman of the housing, finance and administration, and electricity committees, and the Timaru Airport Authority, of which he was chairman for a total of 17 years. He is a former president of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, and a former member of the Timaru College Board of Governors; the South Canterbury Public Relations Office Board of Control, and Timaru Fire Board, and is chairman of the South Canterbury Road Safety Committee, and a trustee of the PJunket Society. In the Second World War, he served for five years and a half.

Mr G. A. Harris, Mayor of Temuka from 1944 until 1962, sprang a surprise when he robbed Mr A. J. Mcßae of his seat on the Catchment Board, representing the combined district of the boroughs of Waimate, Temuka and Geraldine.

Mr Harris, who served on ' the Catchment Board for 10 years in the 19505, is chairman of the standing committee of the Canterbury Pro[vincial Patriotic Council. There were elections for [the Timaru City Council, Timaru Harbour Board, S.C. Electric Power Board, S.C. Catchment Board and S.C. Hospital Board. No elections were necessary in Levels County. At Waimate, there were also elections for the Borough Council and Catchment Board representation, while in Waimate County there were contests for the Waihao and Hakataramea ridings. In Temuka, the Mayor (Mr C. J. L. Pye) was elected unopposed, but an election was required for the Borough Council and for one seat on the Harbour Board.

Elections in the Mackenzie County were for the Fairlie and Opuha ridings; Power Board representation, and seats on the Fairlie Town Committee. .The Mayor of Geraldine is Mr W. S. Aitken (elected unopposed). An election, however, was necessary for the Borough Council. Three candidates fought for supremacy in the Temuka riding of Geraldine County. There were six contenders for three seats on the Geraldine Licensing Trust, and 10 contestants for half that number of vacancies on the Winchester County Town Committee. The county area of the Trust issue was conducted by postal vote, and the Geraldine Borough region under normal voting pro cedures.

Special votes could affect the outcome of the election for the Timaru City Council, as Mr P. G. D. Knowles—a sitting member and the “twelfth man” by the skin of his teeth, leads a fw 10 '!!’ sittin B membei (Mr J. M. Bishop) by only two votes. Results Were:
