Mayor of Blenheim gains big majority

Blenheim’s Mayor, Mr S. P. Earling, was returned for a fourth term with a handsome majority over the nearest of his two rivals, Mr A. B. Barratt. He polled slightly more than twice the, votes recorded by Mr Barratt.

More than 300 special I votes were received and ; these could well decide the last position on the council. On the preliminary count only 53 votes separate three candidates. Mr M. W. Wishart, a sitting councillor, was not elected but is one of those likely to be affected by the special votes. Borough voters returned all sitting members of the hospital board, and the harbour

board. Taking a seat on the harbour board is Mr B. J. Dalliessi, former Mayor of Picton, who is now living in Blenheim. But they rejected Mr G. E. Marshall, whose seat on the power board has been won by Mr L. C. Duckworth. Special votes may upset the preliminary count for the catchment board representation. Here, Mr D. J. Gosling, a sitting member, trails Messrs F. W. Horton and D. L. Kidd, both of whom occupy the fourth seat with the same number of votes. The poll of between 55 and 60 per cent was slightly . above last election’s figure, »• Results of polling are:— !■
