Sixth term endorsed for Mayor of Waimate

The Mayor of Waimate (Mr A. J. Mcßae) will embark on his sixth successive term in office, having beaten his rival for the position, the deputy-mayor (Mr A. G. McHardy), in the local body elections at Waimate on Saturday, by a 269-vote margin. Mr McHardy, who had served as a Waimate Borough councillor for about 20 years, did not seek reelection to the council. Mr Mcßae lost his seat as the combined Waimate, Geraldine, and Temuka boroughs’ representative on the South Canterbury Catchment Board, to a former mayor of Temuka, Mr G. A. Harris. Sixteen candidates stood for the nine seat Waimate Borough Council All seven sitting members retained office while the two new counciUors are Mr A. F. MeLay, a chartered accountant, who topped the poll, and Mr M. R. Thorby, managing director of a furniture factory. Four men contested the two seats for Waihao riding representation on the Waimate County CoundL The sitting member, Mr B. M. McHwraith, was reelected and Mr N, L. Andrews will fill the other position.
