Mining and oil shares drift; industrials improve

Mining and oil shares continued to drift aimlessly in dull trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. The industrial sector had a few selected rises and was slightly stronger on balance. Volume remained low. New B.H. fell 20c to 940 c, but C.R.A. firmed 6c to 686 c. Kathleen Investments shed 20c to 340 c, while Queensland Mines dropped 10c to 560 c. Metals Explorations closed 15c down at 460 c, but Peko finned 10c to 880 c. Great Boulder and W.M.C. were also marginally firmer. Seicast stood Out in an otherwise dull speculative sector by rising 13c to 173 c on the news of higher nickel assays at Mount Agnew in Western Australia. Woodside firmed 5c to 130 c. Santos dropped 5c to 365 c, but Beach firmed 3c to 40c.

B.H.P. firmed 25c to 1290 c but. Comalco dropped 15c to 325 c in a slow reaction to Alcoa’s announced cut in production. Philip Morris rose 16c to 850 c and Bell Brothers rose 15c to 255 c. Ampol and Sleigh firmed 3c each in response to Govem-

ment action against cutprice petrol imports. SYDNEY SUM.—Ampul, 58; Ansett, 66; A.W.A., 124; A.G.C., 185; A.N.1., 94, 8.N.5.W., 580; 81.
