Population growth in Marlborough
Of the 13 statistical areas into which New Zealand is divided for census purposes, only Marlborough recorded a larger percentage increase in population between 1966 and 1971 than in the preceding inter-censal period.
Marlborough’s population rose from 29,428 at the 1966 census to 31,533 at the 1971 census, an increase of 7.2 per cent. Between 1961 and 1966 the area’s increase was 6.1 per cent. For the whole of New Zealand, the population increase was 6.9 per cent in the last five years, compared with 10.8 per cent in the previous five years. Marlborough’s 7.2 per cent growth in the last five years was exceeded only by Central Auckland’s 13.8 per cent and South Auckland-Bay, of Plenty’s 8.4 per cent. The county town of Renwick showed the largest percentage increase—4o.3 per cent—in the statistical area. The boroughs of Blenheim and Picton grew 11.5 per cent and 10.4 per cent respectively. The Kaikoura County population declined 3.8 per cent, and part of the Awatere County population fell 7.9 per cent.
