Climbers still stranded

An attempt yesterday afternoon by Graeme Dingle and Jill Tremain to leave the Murchison hut, at the end of the Murchison glacier, was given up when the climbers found the snow too soft and the weather beginning to look doubtful.

In a report last evening to the Canterbury Mountain Radio Service, Mr Dingle said that the snow was so soft that even on skis he and Miss Tremain sank up to their knees in it.

Mr Dingle and Miss Tremain hope to be able to leave the hut this morning when overnight frosts have hardened the snow. The forecast is for clearing weather this morning. The climbers have been at the hut for more than eight days.
