ENROLLING SLOW

The rate of enrolment for 20-year-olds for the forthcoming local-body elections in October is slow, according to the Department of Internal Affairs. Since the last General Election, in November, 1969, nearly 100,000 people have become eligible to vote in the local elections. More than half of these are 20-year-olds and for them 1971 is the first year in which their age group may take part. Enrolment is compulsory for all who are qualified. For most people who do not pay rates on property this means being 20 years or older, having resided in New Zealand for .12 months and having lived in the district for at least the last three months. An enrolment form, and all relevant information, is available from council offices.

Election day for local body elections is October 9, but the rolls close on September 17. Anyone who turns 20 after the rolls close and before election day can record a special vote, but it is still necessary to enrol before October 9.
