New records set at Te Mania sale

Previous sale statistics were eclipsed by a large margin when the Te Mania Angus Stud, of Hundalee, held its annual sale on the property yesterday. This was achieved in spite of the offering being the largest so far put before buyers. The 50 lots put into the ring, returned an average of $906. compared with $651 for 37 lots last year. At $4lOO, the top price was also a new Te Mania record. The successful bidder was the NMA Company, Christchurch, acting for the Mount Torlesse Station, of Springfield. Altogether, there were 10 sales at $lOOO or more. They included a sale at $lBOO to Dalgetys of Christchurch, acting for the Barwidgee Stud, of Melbourne.

While the buying gallerv was no bigger than at any of the previous sales, bidding was brisk, and in spite of the offering being larger, a number of buyers were unable to fill their requirements. Although Canterbury buyers took most of the entry, a number of lots went to Blenheim, Nelson, and the West Coast, while two lots were purchased for a Southland buyer Yesterday’s sale followed a very satisfactory sale for a catalogue of 104 bulls at Kaikoura earlier in the week. The strong Inquiry throughout was yet further evidence of the strong and wide-spread trend of hill country fanners switching more to cattle.
