LAWYER SOUGHT

San Quentin shootings (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAN RAFAEL (California), September 1. Stephen Bingham, the young lawyer who visited the “Soledad brother” George Jackson, at San Quentin Prison just before Jackson’s ss cape attempt, was charged yesterday with five counts of murder. Jackson and five other persons were slain in the August 21 incident. The District Attorney (Mr Bruce Bales, of Marin County) told a news conference that he had filed a four-page affidavit accusing Bingham, aged 29, of murder in the slayings of three prison guards and two convicts.

Mr Bales said that an allpoints bulletin was issued for Bingham’s arrest. Bingham, grandson of the late former Connecticut Governor and United States Senator, Mr Hiram Bingham, visited Jackson shortly before prison authorities said that the black convict pulled a 9 millimetre pistol from a wig and attempted to escape. There has been no trace of Bingham and his father has expressed concern that he might be held against his will by militants.
