Search for climbers

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1 Eight members of the Wellington Face Rescue Squad and two policemen from the Search and Rescue Organisation left Wellington tonight to reinforce a party of Tongariro National Park rangers who are searching for three people overdue in a blizzard on Mount Ruapehu. The director of search and rescue (Inspector W. Bridge) said tonight that the three climbers might be sheltering in the Whangaheu Hut. “The ranger party was unable to reach the hut today because the weather was too severe. If the three overdue men—one from Wellington and the other two from the Hutt Valley—are not at the shelter it could be a difficult rescue,” Inspector Bridge said. “I felt it would be prudent to have a few more experienced men on the scene to back up the ranger unit.”
