U.S. planes return

The two United States Navy ski-equipped Hercules which made an early flight to the Antarctic yesterday landed back at Christchurch! early last evening after an! uneventful journey.

The Hercules which carried the commander of the United States Navy Antarctic support force (Rear-Admiral L. B. McCuddin) set off from the Williams Field skiway well ahead of the second Hercules yet it was the last to reach Christchurch. The admiral’s plane touched down at 6.40 p.m. and the other at 6.22 p.m. The two Hercules brought back about a ton and a half of mail—the first to leave the continent for seven months—and about 3001 b of baggage which belongs to the men who spent the winter at McMurdo Station and who will leave next month. The three Hercules are expected to return to the United States tomorrow.
